How long does it take for 7 Panel Hair Follicle Drug Test results?
A negative hair drug test typically delivers results in two to three business days, though in certain cases, it may take longer. If the drug screening is not negative, additional testing is required. Our laboratory runs a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) confirmation test on every non-negative 7 panel hair follicle drug test. This provides an official measurement of the drugs that are in the person's system. This confirmation testing takes 3-5 business days, which can be longer if more than one drug screen comes back as non-negative.
How are Hair Follicle Drug Test results reported?
The 7 Panel Hair Follicle Drug Test results are reported in secure PDF files which include a detailed list of the drugs that have been tested for. For each class of prescription and illegal drugs, you will see an indication of Positive or Negative. If the hair follicle drug test is positive, we will indicate the specific metabolites that were detected. If you would like to know the quantitative levels that were found in a positive result, these are available by request. This PDF file can be easily downloaded via our secure portal, printed or forwarded. We can also send or fax the drug test results to any individual, employer or organization that requires it.
How far back can drugs be detected using the 7 Panel Hair Drug Test?
Our 7 Panel Hair Drug Test can look back up to 90 days.
How long should my hair be for a Hair Drug Test?
Hair should be at least an inch and a half long from the root in order for drug testing to be performed. If the hair is not long enough, we can also collect body hair at select locations. Please keep in mind that body hair collection is not available at all of our clinics, and may limit your location options.
About Our 7 Panel Hair Follicle Drug Test
How a Hair Follicle Drug Test Works
Although it is called a hair follicle drug test, this is something of a misnomer, as the follicle is what attaches your hair to the skin. The hair samples used in hair testing are the strands of hair that grow 1.5 inches from the root. Since hair growth is approximately a half-inch every month, 1.5 inches of growth represents the past three months of a person's drug use history. Hair collection is typically done from the head, but we can also test leg, chest or underarm hair strands.
Drug Detection Times for a 7 Panel Hair Follicle Drug Test
A 7 panel hair follicle drug test offers the longest detection time — approximately 90 days. However, there are several factors that can affect the detection window. The amount ingested of a particular drug makes a difference. The more someone takes of a certain substance, the longer it is detectable in a 7 panel hair follicle test. Frequency of use is another factor. The more often someone uses a drug, the longer it is found in their system. Hair drug tests are not designed to detect a single use. Rather, they are good at detecting long-term use over an extended span of time. Another consideration is body hair versus head hair. Since the body has more dormant hair, body hair may retain drugs for longer than head hair.
For amphetamines, cocaine, methadone, opiates, benzodiazepines and methaqualone, the detection time with a urine drug screen is approximately 3-7 days. For marijuana use, the detection period is 30 days. Compare that to a 7 panel hair follicle drug test, which can detect all these substances for as long as 90 days.
These detection times can vary by the length of time that the person has been using the drug, the dosage amount, and the person's metabolism.
