Local information for Memphis Occupational Testing

Workplace occupational health standards help ensure that employers provide a safe and healthy working environment for their employees. While following all Memphis workplace health regulations helps keep employees safe, it also has an added benefit of protecting employers from liability that could arise as a result of an employee injury or death caused by unsafe work conditions.

It's also critical for employees to fully understand both their rights and obligations under the Memphis occupational health guidelines. This allows them to do their part in minimizing workplace accidents and injuries and will help them understand how to access Memphis occupational health services when needed.

While there are no Memphis occupational health guidelines specific to employers located within the city, the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development has developed a set of standards and rules that adhere to the guidelines set forth by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1972.

In addition to these rules, the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security outlines specific qualification requirements for all potential candidates applying for a position as a State Trooper. This includes passing a timed physical agility test and medical, physical, and psychological examinations.

The state of Tennessee also has a state-of-the-art Tuberculosis Control Program which provides a wide range of recommendations including a requirement for all new employees in correctional and detention facilities to undergo a physical examination for TB disease. The program also includes a detailed TB Surveillance Program for healthcare workers.

More recently, the state of Tennessee addressed issues created by the COVID-19 pandemic with the passing of Tennessee Act No. 6 (previously HB9077) in November of 2021. This act prohibits employers from requiring employees to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 and from terminating or discriminating against employees based on their COVID-19 vaccination status.

This is now an exception to Tennessee's "employment-at-will" doctrine, which states that employers may terminate employees for any reason (or no reason at all) without legal liability (with certain exceptions, like discrimination or termination based on being called to military duty, jury duty, filing workers compensation, and other similar issues).
