The streets of Yonkers are much safer now that more than a dozen suspected gang members have been arrested on drug and murder charges. Following a six-month undercover investigation known as "Operation Elm Sweep," officials apprehended 12 of 14 identified suspects. The defendants have over 100 arrests, 56 convictions, and 20 open cases. The suspects are accused of selling narcotics and crack cocaine. Several were also connected to various assaults, stabbings, attempted murders, and murders.
Officials say, "There is definitely a correlation between drugs and guns. When you disrupt drug operations, it's less opportunity for somebody to be on the street committing a violent felony."
