Wilmington, North Carolina: Drug abuse trends
Every day, more than 11 North Carolinians die from drug overdoses. The main factor in these deaths is opioids. In 2023, over 9,000 people in the state visited emergency departments for opioid-related overdoses, and New Hanover County alone saw 83 opioid overdose-related visits by November.
Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It works by blocking opioid receptors and restoring normal breathing in individuals experiencing an overdose. Although Naloxone is not a treatment for opioid use disorder, it can prevent fatal outcomes.
In Wilmington, Naloxone is widely available through several local organizations. North Carolina passed a standing order that allows government and non-government organizations to distribute Naloxone to individuals at risk. Local providers include Coastal Horizons Center, which offers Naloxone and training at 615 Shipyard Blvd, and New Hanover County Health & Human Services, which distributes free Narcan at its Public Health Clinic on Greenfield St. Other options include the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition and The Healing Place of New Hanover County, both offering free Naloxone and overdose rescue kits to those at high risk.
