Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Wichita, KS, and Sedgwick County

Opioid overdoses, particularly fentanyl, are rising in Wichita and Sedgwick County. Since police officers are often the first on the scene for drug overdoses, Wichita and Sedgwick County police officers are equipped with Narcan, also known as naloxone, a life-saving drug that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses. The immediate administration of Narcan by police officers can save lives since overdose victims no longer have to wait for EMS to arrive and administer the drug.

Additionally, Sedgwick County is now using a new tool to address overdose deaths: wastewater monitoring. This approach, initially used to trace COVID-19 levels during the pandemic, is now applied to detect "high-risk substances" like fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and nicotine in the community. The county's health director, Adrienne Byrne, highlighted the efficiency of this system, noting that the advanced lab equipment allows for detailed analysis of drug prevalence in specific areas. By leveraging this real-time data, Sedgwick County aims to not only provide immediate responses, such as naloxone distribution but also implement preventive measures and educational initiatives in schools to raise awareness about the opioid crisis and general drug issues in the area.

Experts Say…

Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter spoke about officers carrying Narcan for overdose victims. "What's most important is that we have it in the field where the deputies that are responding to these types of calls have it available to them immediately," he said, "We'll never arrest ourselves out of drug use." He explained that education awareness is important and that treatment must exist for those who want to get away from using drugs.
