Local Initiatives Used to Address Substance Abuse Concerns in White Bear Lake, MN

To combat the ongoing impacts of the nationwide opioid epidemic and its negative effects on White Bear Lake and surrounding areas, Ramsey County Public Health developed the Opioid Response Initiative. This countywide effort was created by county officials to more effectively prioritize the awareness, prevention, and treatment of opioid abuse amongst its local residents.

Over the years, the Opioid Response Initiative has worked to provide residents with a variety of resources, including their Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program. The MAT program is a corrections-based treatment initiative that works to provide African-American and American Indian communities with direct access to opioid abuse treatment. The initiative also offers a disposal box program where unwanted medications can be properly discarded to help curb abuse concerns.

Substance Abuse Laws and Regulations in White Bear Lake, MN

During the 2023 legislative session, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz passed a new legislation requiring schools across the state to maintain a supply of nasal naloxone. Naloxone is a type of opioid antagonist medication that can be used in emergency situations to reverse the deadly side effects of opioid overdose.

Beginning July 1, 2023, the new legislation requires each school district as well as charter schools to maintain a supply of two doses of nasal naloxone across each school building. Alongside this new legislation, the Minnesota Department of Health will be working with school officials to provide training resources for employees to help ensure the medication is properly administered to students if an emergency arises.
