In January 2023, a traffic stop in Wheat Ridge ended in a drug bust where Wheat Ridge officers seized a stolen handgun, a pound of methamphetamine, and 1,000 fentanyl pills. Before the drug bust, officers pulled over a vehicle with expired tags around I-70 and Kipling, and the driver also had an expired driver's license. Inside the vehicle, officers noticed a container in plain view, which was filled with methamphetamine crystals. Wheat Ridge officers then searched the vehicle, finding the fentanyl pills and handgun. The 42-year-old driver, who already had a drug record, faced charges that included possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Michael Miller, Opioids Initiatives Coordinator at Jefferson County Public Health, spoke about opioid overdoses in the Wheat Ridge and Jefferson County community. "Unfortunately, we know overdoses, particularly from opioids such as fentanyl, are a huge public health concern in our community. Though some people may feel disconnected from the problem, it touches all of us, and we each have a role to play in preventing overdose," Miller said. "By taking a few easy steps, everyone in Jeffco can better understand the issues surrounding overdose and equip themselves with the necessary tools to save a life." These overdose prevention tools include receiving education on identifying and preventing overdoses, obtaining naloxone, and safely storing and disposing of prescription drugs.
