Experts Say...
According to the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General, since the year 2000, several shifts have been made in the law to help with the proper disposal of prescription medications, expanding treatment options for residents that are addicted to opioids, and controlling prescription drug abuse.
There are federal laws in place that affect the disposal of prescription medications, and disposing of these medications promptly reduces the chance of them being misused.
According to the DEA, "[Previous] restrictions [on drug disposal] resulted in the accumulation of pharmaceutical controlled substances in household medicine cabinets that were available for abuse, misuse, diversion, and accidental digestion."
