West Hempstead's Reaction to Recreational Marijuana Legalization

On March 31st, 2021, New York State legalized recreational marijuana use. The 128-page "Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act" covers important topics such as criminal justice reform, law enforcement, and how the tax revenue will be spent. Most West Hempstead residents are pleased and say they look forward to the positive impact that will come from the 4% cannabis tax revenue allotted to the state's local governments.

However, the town's board does not feel the same. They have united to oppose the sale of recreational sales in their districts. Under the new law, the state would levy a 14% sales tax on marijuana sales. Of this, 9% would go to the state treasury, 3% to cities, towns, and villages, and 1% to county governments. Areas that refuse to allow marijuana sales will forego this revenue.

Nassau County Doctor Charged with "Depraved Prescription Abuse"

For the first time ever, a Nassau County doctor has been charged with second-degree murder for prescription practices that led to the deaths of five patients between 2016 and 2018. In addition to the five counts of murder, he is also charged with 11 counts of reckless endangerment in the first degree (a class D felony).

Prosecutors argue George Blatti provided massive quantities of dangerous drugs to his patients, ignoring his ethical obligations, showing a total disregard for the law, and showing a depraved indifference to human life. If he's convicted of the top charge, he faces a potential maximum penalty of up to 25 years to life in prison.
