In March 2022, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Hartford Police Department announced one of the most successful and largest drug busts witnessed in the state of Connecticut. Following an eight-month-long investigation, two Dominican Republic nationals living in Hartford were arrested and charged with multiple offenses related to drug trafficking.
According to law enforcement, the DEA raided a residence where they discovered and seized 16 kilograms of fentanyl, worth millions of dollars. Officials also discovered four high-powered rifles, two AR-15s, two AK-47s, and four handguns, along with false identification cards and $60,000 in counterfeit money.
Among the paraphernalia discovered, officials also found thousands of counterfeit pills that were meant to resemble oxycodone but were instead the deadly synthetic opioid, fentanyl. The two suspects, Erasmo Rosario-Hernandez and Wily Arias De La Cruz, face a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life in prison for their role in this trafficking operation.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in West Hartford, CT
In 2019, the state of Connecticut passed a law that requires hospitals to administer a mental health screening or patient assessment to individuals being treated for a nonfatal opioid drug overdose. The results of this screening must be made available to the patient or the patient's parent, guardian, or legal representative.
The data reported must also be provided to the Department of Public Health to support a more accurate substance abuse statistic collection. Overall, this effort works better to target a patient's substance abuse treatment needs while also enhancing substance abuse surveillance across the state.
