Although many also reported having issues before 2020, the pandemic is thought to have exacerbated conditions and led to an influx in people abusing drugs. Overall, the number of people with mental health struggles has increased with fatal drug overdoses. In 2020, Connecticut had about 38.9 deaths from drug overdoses for every 100,000 people, whereas in 2015, the state had about 22.3 drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people.

Connecticut has experienced high numbers of opioid-related deaths, which accounted for 90.8 percent of all drug overdose deaths in the state in 2020. That year, 1,258 people died because of overdoses caused by opioids. Opioids have become one of the biggest threats to human life across the USA. Recently, fentanyl has caused the drug overdose death rate to rise significantly in Connecticut and throughout the country. Fentanyl's easy availability and high potency have created an even more dangerous market for people who use street drugs. Without even knowing that another drug is spiked with fentanyl, people often experience severe or fatal overdoses from the opioid.
