Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Warsaw
Kosciusko County Sheriff Kyle Dukes is all too familiar with the ongoing drug problems in the Warsaw area and is working with his department to curb illicit drug use. According to Dukes, 81% of the people currently incarcerated in Kosciusko County jail are there due to drug-related charges, and meth or heroin use is to blame for many of the theft and domestic violence calls that occur in the county.
When Dukes took over as sheriff, he made it his goal to get drugs off his streets, partnering with NET43, a multi-agency drug enforcement task force. In addition to working with NET43, he's also focusing on eliminating drug use in the jail, in part, by backing the Jail Chemical Addiction Program (JCAP), a program that aims to help inmates overcome addiction and get back on their feet.
Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Warsaw, Indiana
Recently, Kosciusko County's opioid committee held a meeting to finalize plans to take advantage of matching grants that would provide more than $500,000 for programs focused on fighting opioid addiction in Warsaw and the surrounding area. The plan puts a significant focus on mental health counseling and support for juveniles.
Meanwhile, Kosciusko County Coroner Tyler Huffer is taking a different approach to addressing the area's opioid problems. To raise awareness, he plans to erect a sign outside his office that will keep a real-time tally of the number of overdose deaths in the county. The reason for the sign? He says, "We can't sit by idly and let this happen anymore because it's happening to families. It's happening to parents. It's happening to their children."
