According to the Mass Department of Health, there was a 2.5% increase in opioid-related overdose deaths in the state from 2021 to 2022. Among the deaths that occurred in 2022, 93% of those where a toxicology report was available indicated the presence of fentanyl. The city of Waltham also experienced a notable increase in opioid-related deaths in 2022. Preliminary state data showed an estimated total of 522 opioid-related overdose deaths in the first quarter of 2023.
