The handling of a recent Tulare County drug arrest has sparked significant controversy. In June 2022, two men were accused of trafficking fentanyl after a traffic stop near Highway 99 and Tulare Avenue. During a search of the vehicle, the Tulare County High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Unit (HIDTA) found 150 packages of fentanyl containing 1,000 pills each—a street value of approximately $750,000.
Jose Zendejas, 25, and Benito Madrigal, 19 were arrested and their bail was set at $1 million. However, following a pre-trial risk assessment, the men were determined to be "low-risk" and were released on their own recognizance. Neither the district attorney nor Tulare County Sheriff's office was consulted before the men were released. The men then no-showed for their July court date. Additional warrants were issued, and the men will be held without bond if they are apprehended. Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux says he places blame on the state's "soft on crime" policies.
