Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) tries to combat drug use and its consequences within the community actively. Efforts are focused on preventing injury and death from drug use, reducing infectious diseases related to drug use, promoting efforts to prevent and reduce addiction, and using data and public health surveillance to inform prevention and response efforts.
On a state level, Governor Glenn Youngkin introduced a comprehensive strategy to combat the fentanyl crisis, marking May 9, 2023, as National Fentanyl Awareness Day. This strategy includes public safety, prevention, education, and treatment efforts. One key component is the executive order directing the launch of a new fentanyl-fighting strategy, which is part of the broader "Right Help, Right Now" plan aiming to transform behavioral health and reduce opioid overdoses in Virginia and Virginia Beach by 20 percent.
A critical tool in these efforts is REVIVE! training, which educates Virginians on recognizing and responding to opioid overdose emergencies using naloxone, a medication that reverses opioid overdoses. The training is part of a broader initiative to make naloxone more readily available.
