Substance Abuse Statistics for Trinidad, CO
Substance Abuse Laws and Regulations in Trinidad, CO
In an effort to better address substance abuse concerns in recurring criminal offenders, the state of Colorado passed House Bill 22-1326 in July 2022. Also known as the Fentanyl Accountability and Prevention Act, this new law now requires drug offenders to undergo substance abuse assessments as part of the probation process.
These substance abuse assessments will be used to determine whether an offender suffers from opioid abuse disorder (OUD) to make more calculated treatment and sentencing recommendations. Likewise, drug offenders who face jail time must be provided medication-assisted treatment (MAT) while serving it if they have been diagnosed with OUD during their assessments under HB22-1326.
Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse Concerns in Trinidad, CO
With a rise in opioid abuse and overdose concerns experienced across Trinidad and the surrounding Colorado state, the Naloxone Project was established in 2021 to enhance accessibility to Naloxone. Naloxone is an emergency medication used during opioid overdoses to reverse their deadly side effects. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide all Colorado hospitals and emergency departments with Naloxone resources to distribute to at-risk patients.
Approximately 97% of Colorado emergency departments are currently enrolled in the Naloxone Project. Additionally, the Naloxone Project introduced the Maternal Overdose Matters (MOMs) initiative back in August 2022, which now has over 90% of labor and delivery units currently participating. Together, these initiatives will work to preserve the lives of patients at risk of overdose while encouraging them to seek solutions to their substance abuse concerns.
