Toledo, OH: Drug abuse trends

Fentanyl is a common culprit for overdose deaths in Toledo. Many samples of heroin contained fentanyl, and some contained almost only fentanyl. At about 50-100 times more potent than morphine, fentanyl has caused overdose deaths to skyrocket in Toledo.

Toledo is facing significant problems in its worsening opioid crisis. Some of Toledo's most commonly abused drugs include methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, crack, marijuana, synthetic cannabinoids, and benzodiazepines. Despite the high abuse rate for many drugs in the area, the presence of prescription opioids on the streets has decreased in recent years.

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Toledo, Ohio

Drug trafficking is also a major issue in Toledo. Due to its location, Toledo is a hotspot for drugs to enter and move across the country. Multiple arrests by law enforcement have demonstrated this issue.

In January 2021, two people were arrested for carrying large quantities of illegal drugs. This included about 9.9 pounds of meth, 1.5 ounces of fentanyl, and 50 pounds of marijuana. A second arrest in Toledo also happened in January, which led to a meth lab located east of Toledo. In 2020, an operation led by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces resulted in the indictments of 24 people who were distributing some of the city's most abused drugs—crack, cocaine, and fentanyl.
