News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in The Woodlands, TX

In May 2022, a 19-year-old man from The Woodlands area was arrested after law enforcement discovered he supplied two local teens with fentanyl, which resulted in their death. The suspect was charged with two counts of manufacturing or delivering a controlled substance that resulted in death or bodily injury. These charges come after newly passed Texas legislation now allows the state to press criminal charges on those who provide illegal narcotics that result in death.

According to reports, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office received a call involving two unconscious teens in a home on Stanwick Place in The Woodlands. Law enforcement found the teens, who were both Woodland High School seniors, deceased inside the home. Following an autopsy, law enforcement discovered the two died from a drug overdose caused by the fentanyl that was later connected back to the suspect.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in The Woodlands, TX

At the 2022 Annual Montgomery County Overdose Awareness Day Event, Texas Governor Greg Abbott discussed the ongoing concern of opioid-related overdose deaths as well as the initiatives the state of Texas is taking to combat it. These efforts include new legislation creating harsher penalties for drug dealers and expanding access to Narcan, an emergency opioid overdose treatment drug.

During the event, Governor Abbott also presented the M-COPE foundation with a proclamation recognizing August 31 as International Overdose Awareness Day. M-COPE is a statewide advocacy group that assists various individuals who have been affected in some way by an opioid overdose. Their efforts work to educate and increase awareness of substance abuse disorders and provide families and friends with the resources to get their loved ones on the right track.
