Like much of the nation, Texarkana is facing increasing threats from the deadly opioid fentanyl. In March 2023, Texarkana emergency officials reported responding to five overdoses during a single 24-hour period. These particular overdoses were allegedly linked to synthetic marijuana that was laced with fentanyl.
Texarkana Emergency Center representative Dr. Matt Young explained that the threat "is at crisis level." He went on to say that opioid overdose is the leading cause of death in young people aged 18 to 45 and two-thirds of those deaths are related to fentanyl ingestion. The police department is now partnering with the Texarkana Emergency Center to educate the area's youth on the dangers of this lethal drug.

If convicted, the men face 25 years to life in federal prison.
