Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Texarkana DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Texarkana Paternity Suit Goes to Federal Court
In 2020, a 25-year-old woman named Alexandra Davis filed a civil lawsuit in Texarkana, TX, claiming that Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones was her biological father. In her lawsuit, Davis claimed that following a DNA paternity test that concluded her mother's ex-husband was not her father, she was informed by her mother that Jones was her biological father.
While Jones denies this claim, he has repeatedly refused to take a paternity test. Davis's mother has allegedly had a confidentiality agreement with Jones since Davis was one year old and had not yet been released from it. Jones's lawyer and friend Donald T. Jack Jr. also claims that Jones has paid Davis a sum of nearly $3M, including tuition and a vehicle.
The fight has now moved to federal court, where Davis has requested compensation for "defamation," claiming that Jones and his team labeled her as a "shakedown artist" and an "extortionist." The case is currently ongoing.
How to Establish Paternity in Texarkana for a Child Born Out of Wedlock
In Texas, when a child is born to unmarried parents, the father has no legal rights to the child until legal paternity has been established. There are two primary ways for a couple to do this. The first is to file a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP) form. This legal document has the same effect as a court order establishing paternity. Residents of Texarkana can file an AOP form at City Hall, which is located at 220 Texas Blvd Texarkana, TX 75501.
When completing an AOP is not an option, the child's mother or alleged father can file a petition in court, asking a judge to establish legal paternity. When this happens, the court will typically order a paternity test, which can establish biological paternity with 99% accuracy. If the test shows that the man is the biological father, the Office of the Attorney General can finalize the paternity order.
Reasons to Establish Legal Paternity in Texarkana
In the state of Texas, until legal paternity is established, the mother is considered the child's sole legal parent, and the alleged father has no rights or responsibilities. According to experts at the Texarkana family law firm Bailey & Galyen, mothers often file for paternity so they can get child support. Orders for child support cannot be issued until a man has been declared the child's legal father. Fathers may pursue legal paternity so they can have a relationship with the child and have a say in how the child is raised. Once legal paternity has been established, fathers can petition the courts for visitation and/or custody rights.
