Terre Haute, Indiana: Drug abuse trends
Terre Haute is situated in Vigo County, which is struggling with the opioid epidemic. Some of the most commonly abused drugs are fentanyl, heroin, morphine, and prescription pain relievers. These drugs accounted for almost all overdoses Vigo County has experienced recently. Most of the drug overdoses that have occurred in Vigo County were accidental. However, the number still reached 28 deaths.
In Terre Haute, Indiana, the Fire Department responded to 190 overdose calls in 2019, which decreased to 183 in 2020. These calls involved many substances, including opioids, alcohol, unspecified drugs, medications, and amphetamine. In 2020, the administration of naloxone, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, increased to 93 instances, compared to 60 instances in 2019. However, note that the number of instances does not directly correlate to the number of individuals affected, as multiple doses may be required for the same person or in cases of repeated overdoses.
Vigo County police arrested five people involved in a large drug distribution
In April 2023, police arrested five people in Vigo County. According to authorities, they were involved in a large methamphetamine and marijuana distribution organization. Police seized and found $240,000 in cash, 41.3 ounces of methamphetamine, 41 pounds of marijuana, 85 THC vapes, 99 THC edibles, two pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, 2.6 grams of LSD, and 321 grams of THC wax.
