Tempe is part of Maricopa County, which has seen an increase in drug overdose deaths, according to the last reports from 2021. The current death rate per 100,000 is 37.6. More than two-thirds of these deaths involve opioids. The most significant increase in drug overdose deaths in Maricopa County was among American Indians and Alaskan Natives.
In Maricopa County, fatal overdoses increased among all ages in 2020, but in 2021 the increase continued primarily among people 25 years old and older. Drug overdose deaths affect men far more frequently in Maricopa County, at about 2.5 times more than overdose deaths for women.
From 2012 to 2021, the death rates for synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl and tramadol, increased at an alarming rate by more than 6,000 percent. Deadly overdoses that include fentanyl are constantly growing in Maricopa County.
