In July 2022, a 42-year-old Mexican citizen was arrested near Temecula by the U.S. Border Patrol following a traffic stop that resulted in a massive drug bust. According to reports, an agent pulled over a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling north on Interstate 15. Upon searching the vehicle, Border Patrol agents discovered 156 packages of methamphetamine hidden inside.

Reports showed that the suspect hid the drugs in the doors, tire well, underneath seats, and even in the gas tank. The methamphetamine packages weighed roughly 234 pounds and held a street value of $469,000. According to San Diego Sector agents, this bust contributes to a recent spike in methamphetamine seizures, as over 4,657 pounds of methamphetamine have been discovered since October 2021 alone.

Local Initiatives Relating to Substance Abuse in Temecula, CA

Following numerous reports of opioid overdoses relating to fentanyl across the Temecula and surrounding Riverside County area, county leaders joined together to introduce a new preventative initiative called Faces of Fentanyl. With 406 deaths in just 2021, the initiative holds routine meetings which include local law enforcement, public health specialists, and local government officials to discuss the ongoing epidemic as well as the local changes that can be made.

At the start of the initiative, one of the group's first efforts was to begin pairing behavioral health specialists with local law enforcement to help address drug overdose and abuse as a mental health emergency.
