Florida has been struggling with the number of overdose deaths for years. The state ranks as the second with the highest overdose deaths, just after California. In 2021, opioid-related deaths grew by 5.5 percent, and a drug overdose deaths grew by 7 percent. Some of the most commonly abused drugs are fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
Fentanyl has become the number one drug causing fatal overdoses in Broward County, followed by cocaine and methamphetamine. When comparing the occurrences of fentanyl in 2021 to 2020, there was a 13 percent increase in drug overdose fatalities. In the first six months of 2021, fentanyl was present amongst 553 people who did not survive a drug overdose.
Tamarac, Florida drug deal ends with multiple gunshot victims
Authorities reported a disturbing incident in Tamarac, Florida, on Monday night, where a drug deal took a dangerous turn resulting in gunfire. According to an arrest report, two individuals of ages 18 and 19, went to the location to purchase marijuana.
During the transaction, a struggle ensued, leading to one of the individuals shooting the drug dealer in the neck and head area. The dealer's girlfriend, who was present in the vehicle, remained unharmed. In response, the dealer retrieved a handgun and fired back, injuring the other person involved in the altercation.
Investigations revealed that the dealer and his girlfriend admitted to planning to sell marijuana to the two individuals. Further findings indicated that one of the individuals confessed to intending to rob the dealer for the drugs.
It was revealed that the individuals were in possession of firearms, which they discarded while fleeing the scene. One of them has been arrested for armed robbery. The other remains hospitalized and faces charges of armed robbery and attempted murder.
