Laws and Regulations Pertaining to Substance Abuse in Sweetwater, TN
In May 2023, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed HB 0702, which went into effect on July 1, 2023, to create new and enhanced penalties for offenders found in possession of, trafficking, or producing fentanyl. Fentanyl is an extremely dangerous synthetic opioid that is now responsible for most drug overdose deaths seen across not only the state of Tennessee but the entire U.S.
Also known as the One Pill Will Kill Act, HB 0702 now makes it a Class-B felony to produce, deliver, or possess fentanyl and other similar substances, including carfentanil and remifentanil. With a Class-B felony, offenders will now face an increased fine of up to $100,000 as well as up to 30 years in prison. Tennessee lawmakers hope that this new law will discourage the trafficking and sales of fentanyl across the area, ultimately leading to a reduction of fentanyl-related overdose deaths.
Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse Concerns in Sweetwater, TN
Multiple district attorneys from the East Tennessee region have recently announced a new joint plan called the 313 Initiative. Named after Detroit's 313 area code, this multi-agency and multi-state effort will work to disrupt the flow of illegal narcotic trafficking between Detroit, Michigan, and East Tennessee. Detroit is a popular region where many Tennessee drug dealers get their supply from due to the two locations' I-75 connection.
According to recent reports, the 313 Initiative has already successfully confiscated pounds of methamphetamine and fentanyl as well as over 100 firearms. Alongside these various law enforcement searches and seizures, officers have also been able to arrest and charge over 170 drug traffickers since the program's launch in December 2022.
