Florida has been struggling with the rise of deadly overdoses for years, but in 2020, the state reported an even more significant spike. The number of fatal overdoses increased by 37 percent, which is higher than the country's average. The rise of fentanyl on the streets and the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the number of fatal overdoses between February and April 2020. Floridians turned more to drug and alcohol use during 2020 due to widespread job loss, food insecurity, and new social regulations that made it harder to get the support they needed.
In 2020, fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol were the top three substances that led to fatal drug overdoses in Broward County. Additionally, methamphetamine was commonly involved in deadly overdoses. From 2018 to 2020, the number of people dying from methamphetamine use doubled in Broward County.
Authorities arrested Broward County man and seized large number of drugs
The Broward County authorities arrested a 24-year-old man. The police found many drugs and guns, and the man was part of a gang investigation. He was charged with armed trafficking of oxycodone, its sale, and the manufacture or delivery of cannabis. After the detectives executed the search warrant, they found drugs like oxycodone, ecstasy, cocaine, cannabis, and other narcotics. There were also three dozen firearms.
