Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Santa Clara County
In 2021, fentanyl poisoning was responsible for an astounding 80% of opioid overdose deaths in Santa Clara County. According to the county's medical examiner-coroner, this is 12 times higher than it was in 2018. And while police and community officials are taking efforts to reduce these statistics, there's another serious drug problem on the rise.
While fentanyl is getting a lot of attention in Sunnyvale and the surrounding area, methamphetamine may be an even bigger problem. Currently, approximately 50% of all drug-related fatalities in Santa Clara County are methamphetamine-related. This far surpasses deaths from all opioids combined. Between January 1, 2018, and July 17, 2022, 43.47% of the drug-related deaths in the county were caused by methamphetamine alone, and another 15.24% were caused by a mixture of methamphetamine and opioids, primarily fentanyl.
Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Sunnyvale
In response to the shocking number of fentanyl-related deaths in the area, Santa Clara County has formed a working group that will launch public information and outreach campaigns aimed at reducing local deaths due to fentanyl use. Sadly, many of the fentanyl-related deaths in the area have been young adults, including a 12-year-old girl who died in 2020 after taking a fentanyl-laced pill.
Santa Clara County officials also recently unveiled a plan to make the overdose-reversal medication Narcan available in high schools across the county. According to Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, the Santa Clara County superintendent of schools, there have been 11 opioid-related deaths of children in the 10-to-19-year-old age group in 2021 alone. In an effort to combat this, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is setting aside $135,000 to purchase a Narcan kit for each of the county's 65 high schools.
Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Sunnyvale
The city of Sunnyvale is a bit safer now, thanks to a huge drug and gun bust. In 2021, feds pulled off the largest methamphetamine seizure in Northern California, arresting 44 people and seizing 572 pounds of meth. This operation was the culmination of a two-year investigation that led to arrest warrants being issued in both California and Arizona. In addition to the meth, police also seized huge amounts of fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, guns, and cash. According to Northern District U.S. Attorney David Anderson, most of the drugs came from cartels in Sinaloa, Mexico.
