South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control reported that 29 people in Sumter County lost their lives to drug overdoses in 2018. Out of this group, 16 people overdosed on prescription drugs. A total of 17 people who overdosed lost their lives due to opioids.
Seven people lost their lives due to fentanyl misuse in Sumter County in 2018. Another 8 people died due to heroin misuse. A total of 11 Sumter County residents died after using cocaine in 2018, the Department of Health and Environmental Control reported.
Sumter County reported the largest percentage change in drug overdose deaths between 2017 and 2018 out of all counties in South Carolina. Although the county is far from the largest in population in the state, drug overdose deaths in Sumter County increased from 7 in 2017 to 29 in 2018, a 314% increase.
Experts Say ...
Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis told WIS10 News reporter Laurel Mallory that drug "trap houses" including one in Sumter that was raided and shut down in December 2020, were "dangerous for the innocent people who live in the area because of the violent crimes that are usually associated with drug activity." Over $40,000 worth of heroin, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, and marijuana were seized in the December law enforcement action.
