Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Sturgis, MI

With a mission to reduce the surging number of opioid overdose deaths being seen across the state, the University of Michigan created the Opioid Research Institute. The Institute works to expand research efforts in substance abuse, introduce new evidence-based programs, and encourage collaboration among various Michigan state stakeholders.

With the help of the Opioid Research Institute's efforts, program officials are hoping to effectively reduce opioid abuse long-term while enhancing access to evidence-based treatment programs for Michigan residents in need. The Institute also offers various opioid and substance abuse disorder curricula to health professional students looking to get further involved in abuse reduction efforts.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Sturgis, MI

Back in July 2022, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed new legislation in an effort to expand access to naloxone. Naloxone is an FDA-approved variety of drugs that can be used in the emergency of an opioid overdose to reverse its deadly side effects in patients. Previous legislation made it difficult for those at risk of overdose to obtain naloxone, with less than 20% of those addicted to opioids being able to access the drug.

Now, under House Bill 5166, naloxone can be legally distributed amongst various community-based organizations, such as social service providers and nonprofit groups. In addition to medical professionals, expanding access to community groups encourages an even faster response to instances of opioid overdose, which can then potentially reduce the number of fatalities. This bill also protects community-based organizations from any civil action that involves distributing, administering, or failing to administer the drug.
