Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Sterling, VA

There are some concerning trends in substance use among students, and while most students are not using drugs, those who are tend to misuse alcohol, marijuana, and e-cigarettes. Jennifer Evans, the division's director of student mental health services, explained that students who misuse substances often lack refusal skills and may be influenced by mental health issues, family stress, or peer pressure. Many students are seeking ways to cope with anxiety, depression, or academic pressures, which may contribute to their substance use.

The main issue in the area is the growing danger of fentanyl, which is often found in counterfeit pills that resemble prescription medications like Xanax or Percocet. Some students with prescriptions share their medications, which can put their peers at risk of fentanyl exposure. Evans emphasized that these counterfeit drugs can be deadly, as fentanyl is highly potent.

School leaders are addressing these issues with awareness campaigns and community fentanyl awareness events.
