In August 2022, the Sterling Heights Police Department announced a police chase that led to the arrest of a man and woman and the seizure of numerous fentanyl pills. According to reports, law enforcement attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a dark-tinted BMW vehicle in Sterling Heights where the driver left the scene, wound up on a dead-end road, and fled on foot.

The woman passenger was instantly arrested, as well as the driver after a short foot chase. Upon search of the vehicle, law enforcement found a hidden compartment that contained 20,000 counterfeit Oxycontin pills. The pills were discovered to be fentanyl, and an additional 500 grams of powdered fentanyl were found. The two suspects admitted to transporting narcotics from Mexico for a drug cartel and are currently awaiting a court hearing.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Sterling Heights, MI

With drug overdose deaths surging across Macomb County and the state of Michigan, county officials created the Macomb Partnership for Overdose Prevention initiative. This initiative, which includes local stakeholders like law enforcement, follows a mission to prevent dangerous drug abuse and save the lives of local residents through the use of various preventive programs.

The initiative expanded access to Narcan, an emergency overdose treatment drug used to treat deadly overdose symptoms, by offering training classes and free access with no prescription.
