Springfield, Ohio: Drug abuse trends
Springfield, which belongs to Clark County, has seen a rise in overdose deaths. Based on toxicology screens in 2021, at least 91.1 percent of all drug overdose fatalities in Clark County were caused by opiates. The most commonly abused drug was fentanyl, which was involved in 86.1 percent of all overdose deaths. The second most common substance was stimulants, present in 40.5 percent of all overdoses.
Between 2018 and 2021, the incidence of methamphetamine in fatal overdoses saw an increase of over 300 percent. Prescription opioids also rose significantly, by 289.7 percent between 2020 and 2021. The presence of heroin in overdose fatalities decreased by 86.7% from 2018 to 2021.
Authorities seized over 210 pounds of drugs and charged ten people
In June 2022, authorities seized over 210 pounds of narcotics, including 115,500 fentanyl-laced pills, cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine, and almost half a million dollars, seven firearms, and four vehicles. They charged ten people who were supposed to distribute drugs to Central Ohio from California. Mid-level retailers allegedly sold drugs in Springfield, Central Ohio, Youngstown, and West Virginia.
