In November 2022, a Sparks resident was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the possession of methamphetamine and possessing a firearm by a prohibited person. In February 2022, the Sparks man was arrested in Reno for trafficking methamphetamine and possessing a firearm. He posted bail and was released. In April of the same year, another investigation led authorities to discover that he was still selling drugs. They searched his home and found a handgun, methamphetamine, and heroin.

In April 2021, three Sparks men were indicted for distributing fentanyl. Two of the three men conspired to maintain multiple apartments for storing and distributing large amounts of cocaine and fentanyl from November 2019 to March 2021. One allegedly used high school students to distribute fentanyl pills and other controlled substances. The third man was also indicted on four counts of distribution of controlled substances after distributing over 80 grams of fentanyl from July to November 2020.

Experts Say...

Washoe County Sheriff, Darin Balaam, spoke about the fentanyl problem in Sparks and Washoe County. "Some are using fentanyl, but many overdoses, they're not using fentanyl," Balaam said. "They think they're using marijuana. They're using some type of pill they bought off the street. But it's laced with fentanyl. So this is unlike any epidemic we've seen. And it is starting to kill people at a pace that we haven't seen." He also said that fentanyl is dangerous because, for some people without a tolerance, a lethal dose of fentanyl could be as small as a grain of salt.
