One of the largest drug busts ever seen in Kanawha County was successfully completed in February 2016. According to Kanawha officials, a man named Brian Palmer was arrested at a South Charleston motel after law enforcement found him in the possession of a large number of drugs shipped from North Carolina. Law enforcement collected 1,585 grams of meth, 764 grams of marijuana, and 710 grams of heroin with a total street value of almost $500,000.
According to officials, the appearance of the drugs lead investigators to suspect they originated from a type of Mexican cartel. Palmer was charged with felony drug possession, distribution, and carrying a firearm without a permit.

To better combat the opioid crisis experienced across West Virginia, the state legislature enacted the Opioid Reduction Act in 2018. Under these new set of laws, South Charleston prescribers must obey a set of restrictions when prescribing patients opioids. This includes a maximum four-day prescription for emergency room and urgent care visits, a maximum three-day prescription for minors, a maximum seven-day prescription for first-time prescriptions, and no more than a 30-day supply following an initial prescription.

This includes accessing patient history through the Controlled Substances Monitoring Program Database prior to distributing a prescription and documenting any patient prescription refusals within the system.
