Somerville, Massachusetts: Drug abuse trends
According to official reports, 1,340 people died due to opioid overdoses in Massachusetts during the first nine months of 2022. Although authorities are projecting 41 to 70 more overdose fatalities by the year-end, this figure would still indicate a 1.5 percent decrease compared to 2021. Despite this decline, the state continues to grapple with an increase in fentanyl-related deaths, which has risen by eight percent since 2016.
In 2021, Massachusetts recorded over 2,000 opioid-related fatalities, with fentanyl present in 93 percent of the cases. Cocaine was discovered in about 52 percent of overdoses. Following cocaine, benzodiazepines were found in about 31 percent of opioid-related fatalities, and alcohol in 28 percent. Prescription opioids were involved in 14 percent of the deaths, heroin in 10 percent, and amphetamines in 10 percent. These figures indicate a pressing need for effective interventions to address the ongoing opioid epidemic in the state.
