According to recent federal reports, Iowa is the fifth lowest state for drug overdose deaths in the country. However, alcohol-related deaths and drug overdose deaths are beginning to increase in the state. In 2021, Iowa experienced a 14.7 percent increase in drug overdose deaths and a 26 percent growth in alcohol-related fatalities. Although methamphetamine use has been decreasing in recent years, the amount and purity of methamphetamine are near all-time highs.

Local authorities seized over five hundred pounds of methamphetamine in 2021. One of Iowa's successes is that opioid prescriptions have decreased for the fourth year; however, the number of overdose fatalities that involved opioids has increased by 35 percent. In 2021, fentanyl was present in 87 percent of all Iowa's opioid overdose deaths.

Sioux City man was sentenced to twelve years for meth conspiracy

A Woodbury County man was previously convicted for meth distribution in 2014, and between 2020 and 2021, he distributed more than eight pounds of methamphetamine. He also distributed over 150 grams of methamphetamine to people cooperating with law enforcement. The man was found guilty and sentenced to 144 months in prison and eight years of supervised release.
