Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Selma, AL
In April 2023, a Selma man was arrested after trying to escape from police after a traffic stop. The officer asked the man to step out of the vehicle and attempted to put him in handcuffs, but the man resisted even after the officer tased him. The man fled in the vehicle at high speed and drove through a construction zone. The man exited the vehicle while it was still moving, and the vehicle crashed. He fled on foot but was stopped by a K-9, and he was arrested. After searching the vehicle, officers found about 10 pounds of high-grade marijuana and money that appeared to be drug proceeds. The Selma man was charged with trafficking marijuana, fleeing and attempting to elude, obstruction of an officer, and following too closely.
In January 2023, a three-month-long investigation led to the arrest of a Selma man for possessing more than $1 million worth of fentanyl pills. The investigation started after the arrest of a Clovis man for selling fentanyl three months prior. Experts Say...
In 2022, Dr. Julia Boothe, president of the Medical Association spoke about naloxone becoming available by prescription in Selma and throughout Alabama. "Physicians applaud the FDA for taking this first step to make naloxone more widely available. Naloxone saves lives but only if it is readily available when an overdose occurs," she said. "Its prescription-only status is a barrier that limits access and makes it harder to save lives from fentanyl and other opioid overdoses."
