Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Scranton
Erin Moreken was just 28 years old when she died of an overdose in 2002. Former Scranton Mayor Jim Connors and his wife Susie, who were long-time friends of Erin's parents, helped to organize Tour De Scranton, a charity bike ride that raises money to support individuals with drug problems.
The event has been running annually since 2004 and helps to raise money for homeless shelters, drug treatment centers, scholarships for students who have been impacted by substance abuse, and more. The Tour De Scranton is held in September each year, and proceeds go to the Erin Jessica Moreken Drug & Alcohol Treatment Fund.
Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Scranton, PA
Opioid overdoses continue to be a problem in Scranton and the rest of Lackawanna County. In 2021, the county experienced 110 overdose-related fatalities, a significant jump from the 77 that were reported in 2020. Even more notable is the fact that the number of deaths where the synthetic opioid fentanyl was the only drug present in the victim's system increased by 168% over that same timeframe. In 2022, there were nearly 90 confirmed overdoses in the county, with another 20 pending further testing. Fentanyl was present in the toxicology reports of more than 50 of 2022's overdose victims.
In response to this alarming trend, in November 2022, former Gov. Tom Wolf signed into law Act 111, which decriminalized fentanyl test strips. The opioid overdose-reversing drug naloxone is also now available in Lackawanna County schools.
