Fourteen people faced charges, mainly for the Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute and to Distribute Crack Cocaine, which comes with a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, substantial financial penalties, and four years of supervised release after prison time is served. The investigation took place on Savannah's west side, and drug sales took place as early as October 1, 2020. All 14 defendants were Savannah residents.

Experts Say...

Michael Sarhatt, the director of the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT), spoke about the local fentanyl problem. "The amount of fentanyl that can kill you is so small that it's a one-shot deal," he said. "You could have someone just wanting to smoke a joint thinking it's no big deal, and that could have been cross-contaminated with fentanyl, and they could end up dead." Sarhatt said that this crisis is always changing and that awareness is key to solving this problem.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Savannah, GA
