Santa Rosa, CA: Drug abuse trends
April 2, 2020 was one of the deadliest days for Sonoma County in the past five years. Within just three hours, five people died from a drug overdose. All of these deaths involved opioids.
In 2020, at least seventy percent of fatal overdoses were linked to fentanyl. Over the years, the number of overdose deaths involving opioids has been on the rise. In 2017, fourteen people died due to opioid-related overdoses. In 2018, the number rose to 31; in 2020, 111 individuals died from drug overdoses in Sonoma County. California ranks number one for the highest number of drug overdose deaths out of any state in the country, and the numbers continue to get higher.
Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Santa Rosa, CA
The opioid epidemic affects Sonoma County and California as a whole. The National Harm Reduction Coalition has worked for over 25 years to reduce the negative effects of drug use in the area. The coalition also provides a community of support for people affected by drug overdoses, HIV, and hepatitis C due to drug use.
Project TRUE (Teens R U Educated?) is a local initiative driven by young people in the community to spread awareness and education to their peers about substance use. Every year, about 500 other students are reached by the group.
Sonoma County Department of Health Services provides an extensive list of providers for people who struggle with Substance Abuse Disorder (SUD). These agencies can assess each individual to determine eligibility and treatment options.
