News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Santa Maria, CA
Following a massive drug bust in August 2022 that resulted in the arrest of a Santa Maria man, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) made the decision to take control of the case from Santa Barbara County prosecutors and charge the man at a federal level. The escalation in prosecution comes after federal law enforcement learned of the size of the drug seizure as well as the presence of children at the time of the large drug bust.
According to reports, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at a home in Santa Maria following an ongoing investigation. Inside the home, law enforcement discovered 218 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, 27 grams of MDMA, 22.5 pounds of marijuana, and 17,000 M30 fentanyl pills. During the bust, it was also discovered that the suspect's children were living inside the home with drugs present and that drugs were in areas accessible to the children.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Drug Testing in Santa Maria, CA
In May 2022, the state of California passed Senate Bill 864 to expand patient drug testing requirements in hospitals. These new regulations come after the state of California has seen significant spikes in fentanyl-related drug overdoses. Fentanyl is a highly potent and dangerous synthetic opioid responsible for the majority of drug overdose deaths seen across the state.
Prior to this new law, many routine hospital drug screening practices did not test for fentanyl and instead only covered controlled substances like methamphetamine, cocaine, and counterfeit drugs, such as Xanax. To more effectively ensure safe patient care, SB 864 now requires acute care hospitals to also test for fentanyl. This helps healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat patient concerns.
