Experts Say...

Phillip Fiuty is the harm reduction program director at The Mountain Center. The Mountain Center provides overdose education, treatment referrals, and other harm reduction resources in Rio Arriba County and northern Sante Fe County. Fiuty explained that most drug users in the area went from using heroin to heroin mixed with fentanyl. From there, they switched to combination drugs pushed by dealers, which are fentanyl pills marked as "M-30," disguised as 30-milligram OxyContin pills. "Methamphetamine use has skyrocketed right alongside fentanyl," Fiuty said. "Fentanyl showed up and almost entirely displaced heroin. Now, most people are co-using methamphetamine with fentanyl."
