In April 2023, a Santa Cruz County man was arrested for possessing fentanyl, methamphetamine, and multiple firearms. During a search warrant, authorities discovered 752 grams of fentanyl, 76 grams of methamphetamine, and 15 firearms. The firearms included a sawed-off shotgun, assault rifles, high-capacity magazines, 12 pistols, and thousands of rounds of ammunition. The 60-year-old man faced drug and firearm charges.
In Santa Cruz in 2021, the Santa Cruz Police Department evacuated unsanctioned campers near San Lorenzo Riverbank because of flooding. During the evacuation, police seized drugs and arrested a 31-year-old man who had a sheath knife around his neck. During a search, officers found a loaded firearm, a replica BB handgun, $11,211 in cash, 42.9 grams of methamphetamine, 171.7 grams of fentanyl/heroin, and packaging material for drug sales.

Experts Say...
In 2022, Stephany Fiore from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner's Office spoke about the rising drug problem in Santa Cruz County. "Over the years, the prescription drug use (resulting in overdose and death) has disappeared, and more of the illicit drugs have come to the forefront with methamphetamine reaching a peak in 2020," she said. She also said that fentanyl surged from mid-2020 to 2021. SafeRx Program Manager Rita Hewitt said, "Addiction does not discriminate. It affects the lives of most everyone in our community on a personal level, in one way or another."
