One of the most significant issues in Santa Barbara County is fentanyl. Since 2019, fentanyl-involved overdoses have increased by 81 percent. In 2021, Santa Barbara County reported the presence of fentanyl in the body of 50.4 percent of individuals who fatally overdosed.
Of 133 overdose deaths in Santa Barbara County, 7.5 percent were caused solely by fentanyl. However, fentanyl was present in more overdoses, mostly combined with other substances such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and alcohol. Reports also show high alcohol and cocaine use in Santa Barbara County. Experts say that when drug dealers mix fentanyl with other substances, they increase its potency, causing higher numbers of fatal overdoses in Santa Barbara.
Santa Barbara police seized 53 pounds of methamphetamine
Santa Barbara police made the largest drug bust in the city when they searched a home and stopped two vehicles. Police found and seized 53 pounds of methamphetamine, one ounce of fentanyl, and three handguns. The street value of the substances was about $100,000. All of the suspects were charged and are held on $1 million bails. Police stated that this was one of the city's largest drug busts, if not the largest.
