Sandy, Utah: Drug abuse trends
Data from the Utah Department of Health shows that Utah averages about 475 overdose deaths yearly. Most people overdose because of prescription opioids, heroin, or synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Drug overdoses became Utah's leading cause of injury deaths and are currently in the top ten leading causes of all deaths. In Utah, drug overdose fatalities are more common than people dying because of firearms, falls, or vehicle accidents.
In 2021, methamphetamine remained the most common drug involved in deadly overdoses in Utah. Methamphetamine is also one of the most common drugs that are seized by police during drug busts. However, fentanyl's presence in Utah more than doubled in the last few years. Reports show that many adults also use marijuana, heroin, and prescription pain-relief drugs. Young adults mostly drink or use marijuana in Utah.
Sandy man arrested for making and distributing THC vape pens
After authorities discovered that a Sandy man was creating homemade THC vape pens and distributing them, he now faces felony charges. The man possessed over two pounds of marijuana, THC extraction equipment, and a custom laboratory he used to create the vape pens. He lived with his girlfriend and 9-year-old child.
Since the marijuana was not from a dispensary, authorities believed it was likely laced with fentanyl. Commander Carter said, "If you're getting any marijuana from southern Nevada to include Las Vegas area, and it's not from a dispensary, does not have the dispensary packing, it will almost 100% be laced with fentanyl." Fentanyl use has been a significant issue in Sandy and throughout Utah, taking hundreds of lives each year.
The Sandy man now faces charges of manufacturing and distributing a controlled substance and child endangerment.
