Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse
The Harm Reduction Program (HRP), previously known as the Needle Exchange Program, focuses on reducing harm caused by drug use. Throughout Santa Clara County, the HRP distributes overdose prevention kits and other supplies for safer drug use, such as naloxone kits, and educates the community. The Bay Area Medication Assisted Treatment and Peer Support Program (BAMAT) also offers easily accessible Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) to help treat and prevent opioid abuse.
Another initiative is Governor Newsom's CARE Court proposal, which aims to transform the approach to mental health and substance use disorders in California. This initiative focuses on community-based, court-ordered care plans for individuals suffering from serious mental health and substance use disorders. The goal is early intervention before individuals experience hospitalization or incarceration.
Local Drug Busts or Events
Recent law enforcement efforts in San Jose have targeted drug trafficking networks, with significant drug busts involving the seizure of fentanyl pills, marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine. In February 2024, the local authorities arrested a man who was selling synthetic drugs called Pink Panther or Tusi. This substance is a mixture of multiple narcotics, and it can be deadly.
"Usually, it's a combination of ketamine, ecstasy, and amphetamines in varying combinations. But it can also have mixtures of opioids, fentanyl, heroin even, and also, sometimes caffeine," said Dr. Daniel Nelson with Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
