The substance abuse trends in Salinas, California have changed over the years. In the past, ninety percent of people with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) abused more than one drug at a time. A decade ago, about ten percent of these people used opioids as their preferred drugs. Now, one out of three people seeking treatment for drug use in Monterey County uses opioids.
Opioids are potent pain medications, and many abuse oxycodone and fentanyl because these drugs can act have similar effects to heroin. In 2017 and 2018, Monterey County had less than ten overdoses. In 2019, the county's drug overdoses nearly tripled, showing no signs of slowing down.
Police made massive drug trafficking arrests in Salinas
The Salinas Police Department cooperated with other agencies, and law enforcement officials seized multiple drugs, firearms, and money connected to illegal narcotics sales under NorCal Transportation. Police arrested eight suspects.
More than 170 law enforcement officials cooperated on multiple search warrants and assisted with the apprehension of the suspects, which led to numerous charges. Some of them included conspiracy to transport and distribute illegal substances.
Altogether, police yielded five pounds of heroin, sixty pounds of methamphetamine, a pound and a half of cocaine, and 25,000 pills of fentanyl. They also seized nine firearms, two bank accounts, and about 90,000 dollars in cash.
The Salinas Police also found out that NorCal Transportation was connected to the Sinaloa Cartel, and they were transporting narcotics together.
