Notable News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in St. Joseph, MO
In November 2022, a St. Joseph man was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison without parole for a collection of drug and firearm possession and distribution charges. An investigation of the St. Joseph resident first began back in 2019 after he was suspected of stealing from a local Dollar General Store. When law enforcement caught up with the suspect, officers found varying bagged amounts of methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, and suboxone strips, and he was arrested.
Roughly a year later, the Buchanan County Drug Strike Force and St. Joseph Police Department were conducting ongoing surveillance on the suspect as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program. The suspect was arrested again in connection to two existing felony warrants, where law enforcement found even more packaged illicit drugs. Investigators believe that the St. Joseph's resident had been selling roughly 10 ounces of heroin every eight days since August 2020.
Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in St. Joseph, MO
In June 2021, Missouri Governor Michael Parson signed SB 63 to develop a statewide prescription drug monitoring program. This bill was meant to establish the Joint Oversight Task Force of Prescription Drug Monitoring, which will operate the new program by collecting and assessing controlled substance prescription and dispensation data across the state.
With a full program launch expected by 2024, state officials hope it will assist healthcare professionals in better monitoring the use of opioids and other dangerous controlled substances. With higher monitoring efforts across the state, the prescription drug monitoring program can help to identify poor prescribing practices as well as help reduce opioid abuse and overdose in patients.
