Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse
In response to the opioid epidemic, Sacramento County has initiated the Sacramento County Opioid Coalition. This coalition brings together healthcare professionals, community organizations, law enforcement, and concerned citizens to combat the opioid crisis through expanding treatment access, promoting safe disposal of medications, and expanding public education and awareness programs.
Additionally, the Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System pilot program has been implemented in 37 counties, representing 96% of the state's Medi-Cal population. This pilot program seeks to enhance the delivery of substance use disorder treatment services across California, including Sacramento.
Local Drug Busts or Events
Recent years have seen significant drug busts in Sacramento, indicating the city's role in broader drug trafficking networks. For example, in June 2023, a federal grand jury indicted five Sacramento residents on 17 counts, including conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine, alongside various drug and firearm charges.
The U.S. Attorney announced that over a year, this group allegedly dispatched more than a million fentanyl pills nationwide, with law enforcement intercepting around 450,000 of these pills, some hidden in children's toys, during the operation. In addition to the drugs, authorities seized over $80,000 in cash and 17 firearms, discovering that some of the contraband was concealed in secret vehicle compartments.
The defendants face severe penalties, including a minimum of 10 years to life in prison and fines of up to $10 million, pending court decisions. The initiative underscores a committed, multi-agency approach to dismantling high-level criminal organizations and curtailing the opioid crisis in California and the USA.
