On August 14th, 2023, the Oneida County Overdose Response Team issued a warning to residents after nine overdoses occurred in the cities of Rome and Utica over the prior weekend. The overdoses were suspected to be caused by methamphetamines, heroin, and other unidentified drugs, which may have included fentanyl. In addition, there had also been five previous overdoses in the area in the month of August.

According to the Oneida County Overdose Team Dashboard, in 2020 and 2021, there were an average of 229 overdoses in the county per year. This includes 33 fatal overdoses per year and approximately 67 repeat overdoses. The average age of overdose victims in the county is 37.

Local Government's Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Rome

Rome residents struggling with opioid addiction may be able to seek help from Oneida County Health Department's (OCHD) Overdose Prevention and Substance Use Program. The purpose of the program is to take a public health approach to addressing drug use problems in the community. This is financed, in part, with opioid crisis funding that was received in the form of an Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) Grant as well as other grant money. The Opioid Overdose Prevention Program (OOPP) also trains community members on the safe distribution of the overdose-reversing drug nasal naloxone (Narcan). Businesses and organizations within the county can also get Overdose Rescue Kits and Narcan Emergency Cabinets.

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Rome

There are fewer drugs on the streets of Rome following the arrest of three men who are accused of distributing heroin and methamphetamine in the cities of Rome and Utica. The arrests came after a month-long investigation that resulted in the seizure of cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, MDMA, and paraphernalia as well as guns, cars, and more than $85,000 in cash.
